by Gerri Shapiro, MS Ed. For as long as I can remember, I've suffered from back pain. Although I have experienced some relief using heat, cold, massage, chiropractic and acupuncture, invariably the pain has always returned... until... I visited a friend in California who had similar back problems. She told me she had some body work done called Bowen. Her back pain was gone-- and never returned! I was definitely intrigued. I couldn't wait to find out more. When I arrived back home on Maui I got on the internet and discovered that the Bowen Technique originated in Australia and wasn't that well known in the U.S. Hoping to find a practitioner in Hawaii, I emailed close to 40 practitioners around the U.S. and asked if they could refer me to someone on Maui. After about 39 "no's" I got one "yes!" I arranged to have three Bowen sessions. After the third session, my back pain was "history!" I got so excited I could spit! My mother is eighty years old and suffers from severe arthritis. I managed to hunt down a practitioner near where she lives in Murrieta Hot Springs, California. After one session, she slept through the entire night for the first time in six years, and was able to walk without her walker. Ever the skeptic, my sister-in-law reluctantly agreed to try it. As she lay there during the treatment she thought, "This is crap!" By the end of the week, her hip pain was nearly gone. She sent everyone in her office to get a treatment. I was eager to learn as much as I could about the technique, but discovered that most of the Bowen training schools were located primarily in Australia and the UK. Then I got lucky. One of the Bowen instructors offered a training in Honolulu. The dust flew as I raced to the airport. The rest is history... Last month I worked on a local woman who suffered from major pain in her shoulder. She couldn't lift her arm and her hands and fingers felt numb. I gave her a Bowen session and then left. A week later her hands and fingers felt much better, but there was still some pain and stiffness in her shoulder. So I gave her a second session. That night she called from a restaurant where she and her husband were having dinner. "I heard a popping sound during dinner," she said. "Then my shoulder popped itself back into place!" The woman has been pain free ever since. A friend with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia told me she lived in a constant state of severe pain (a "10" on a scale of 1-10). After two sessions her pain level dropped to a "4". She slept through the entire night and she was able to go through the entire day without having to constantly rest. Miracle Pain Relief is based on the Bowen Technique, which involves a series of very gentle, rolling moves on the body using thumbs and fingers. The technique was developed in Australia in the 1950's by Thomas Bowen, a gifted healer who devised a simple but powerful method for releasing pain. He estimated his success rate to be about 88%! The main difference between the Bowen Technique and other modalities is how fast it works, how gentle it feels and how long the pain relief lasts. A session lasts about 40 minutes and can be done while seated or lying down, either through light clothing or directly on the skin. Because it is so relaxing, many people fall asleep during treatment. The technique has been successful in treating back pain, sciatica, headaches, migraines, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, whiplash, knee and ankle pain, hip pain, jaw pain, leg cramps, shin splints, sports injuries, allergies, asthma, hay fever and much more. For me, the miracle lies in the fact that doing so little produces so much relief. My job is to deliver the message... and get out of the way. Gerri Shapiro, MS Ed,
